Hot Topic is currently selling bags made out of t-shirts, disguised as fringe hobo bags:
Grey Allover Fringe Hobo Bag, $22.00
Black Jersey Fringe Shoulder Bag, $22.00
Navy Jersey Fringe Hobo Bag, $24.00
Black Side Fringe Hobo Bag, $24.00
To be fair, they are made out of heavy-weight jersey material and they are reasonably priced. Even the navy color can be kind of cute – maybe more so if had color-contrasting bead details.
But the black and grey looks too much like a t-shirt and the fringe effect feels too much like a DIY project. Now we’re all for DIY fashion, but not when you have to pay for it to look that way. And get this: the closure they used for this bag is velcro. If there’s something to make anything look like an arts and crafts project, it would be velcro (second maybe to elbow macaroni).
T-shirt bags are an environmentally-friendly concept, but they never really went past that “I’m-just-being-crafty-and-I-want-to-recycle-my-old-clothes-into-something-reusable” look. Also, recycled t-shirt bags are hardly ever used beyond supermarkets and grocery shopping.
If you ever come across a t-shirt bag that you think is fashionable, give us a holler here at Fringe Handbags!
