Extra long wasn’t the only length that fringes came out in on the Marc Jacobs Spring 2010 runway. Fringes also appeared in really short pieces, all bunched up in tassels that look like they spurted out of the sides of the handbags:

The combination of the short fringe tassels and the eyelets on the handbags has a repulsive, almost grotesque effect on me. They make the handbag look alive, like a living creature that crawled out of a deep, dark hole. Nevertheless, I still can’t stop staring and that’s sort of a good thing in fashion right? It makes people talk about it, give it publicity, even if what they’re saying is negative. And as the old saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

If those bags are making you want to reach out and touch them too, then here are 5 tasseled handbag choices (though not as extreme as the Marc Jacobs handbags) that could be your “pet” by your side:

Dan W Bright Stripe & Tassel Clutch, now only $67.49 marked down from $120.00

See by Chloe Cherry Large Shoulder Bag, $495.00

Laugoa Capelet, $86.95

Cole Haan Marabelle Drawstring Tote, $302.36 down from $377.95

Jessica Simpson Jimmy Boho Chic Top Zip, $77.50 down from $88.00

We’ll tackle the third and last part of “Marc Jacobs Says More Fringe in Store for Spring 2010″ next week.

It was an extravaganza of mile-long fringes hanging off of handbags at the Marc Jacobs Spring 2010 RTW fashion show, another sign that there’s no stopping fringe for this year:

In his interview, Marc Jacobs said that he was tired of seeing black and studs – things that his 80s-inspired fall 2009 RTW collection was very much full of. For his spring collection, Marc Jacobs went the opposite direction, saying that it was time to bring fashion back to “the theater, the ballet, and the opera”.

You can clearly see the direction he’s going in the white kabuki makeup, the hair in top knots, and the ruffle details on the clothes. The added length on the handbag fringes was definitely a big part of the creative thought process because their swishy, dramatic movements couldn’t have been just a coincidence. The super long fringes lent an elegant air to the entire collection and although not a difficult stretch by any means, made the models look as graceful as ballerinas with every step they took.

It’s time to bring out those handbags with extra long fringes again! If you don’t have yours yet, then here are 4 to choose from, priced high to low:

Horse+Nail Altair Suede Bag, $1,350.00

CC SKYE Rich Hippie Tote, $595.00

Linea Pelle Janis Fringe Shoulder Bag, $395.00

Hurley Venue Shoulder Bag, $52.00

Remember the post about Rihanna’s Louis Vuitton fanny pack? To refresh your memory, here’s a picture of Rihanna with that fanny pack again:

It is Lous Vuitton, but it’s still a fanny pack. A double fanny pack. With a fringe tassel.

As unlikeable a fanny pack is, it’s starting to look like Marc Jacobs isn’t the only thinking that fanny packs are a-okay fashion-wise. Designer Donna Karan was also seen wearing one of her own, at her own Fall 2009 fashion show no less:

During her last interview with FIT’s Valerie Steele, she was also quoted as saying she doesn’t understand why people choose to use handbags when we could all wear comfortable belt bags with pockets. Like the one she’s wearing in the picture.

Maybe it’s easier to adapt this fashion if fanny packs – I mean, belt bags – were as chic and stylish as Donna Karan’s, but when Louis Vuitton and other brands come out with fringe fanny packs like these …

Fringe fanny packs galore

… Donna Karan would totally see why we’re all still sticking with oh so uncomfortable handbags.

Besides, if we wanted something small and falls at the waist, we could always go for hip purses and mini crossbody bags like these (which also don’t look foolish even when fringed):

Madewell Mini Fringe Cross Body Bag

Botkier Howard St Cross Body Bag

Charlie My Love Mini Studded Cheyenne Bag

Rebecca Minkoff Lovespell Rocker Bag

These mini hip bags are better than fanny packs, yes? As long as these bags look cooler than fanny packs, we’ll be staying away from what Donna Karan calls “belt bags”.
